If you want to go mountain biking, you must have the correct type of bike. The bike is made up of many parts and components, the most important of which are enumerated below.

Bottom Bracket. This bracket helps to secure the body of the bike and the crankset together.

Brake Cable. This cable is the connection between the brake mechanism and the brake lever.

Brake Lever. The brake lever is the device attached to the handlebars which allows the biker to operate the brake mechanism. The standard bike has a lever at the left handle bar to operate the front brake, while the rear wheel brake controls the right hand lever.

The Chain. This part consists of a set of circular links that help to transfer your power from the chain to the cogs to make the bike move.

Chain Ring. It is the circular ring with teeth that keeps the chain securely attached to the crank.

The Crank. This is the lever that goes from the pedal to the bottom bracket. It is through this part that power is delivered to the chain rings.

Deraillleur. The derailleur is the device that enables the biker to shift the chain to the different cogs.

Down Tube. The tube that connects the bottom bracket and the stem.

Front Shock. The shock absorber at the front fork.

The Handlebar. That part of the bike with handgrips that can be found at the top of the stem. It is secured to the stem to help you guide where the bike is going.

Headset. The headset is the system that connects the handlebar to the stem down to the front fork.

Hub. Found in the center of the wheel group that is connected to the rim by the spokes.

Idler Pulley. It is the part that is used to control the tightness of the chain by adjusting the spring tension to the bottom pulley of the rear derailleur.

Nipple. The nipple is found at the end of the spoke and connects it to the rim.

The Bicycle Pedal. The biker propels the bike by pushing on the pedal which is connected to the crank.

Rear Shock. On bikes with dual suspension, this is rear tire’s shock absorber.

Rim. The tire rim is part of the bike’s wheel set to which the spokes are attached.

The Saddle. The seat that you sit on.

Seat Post. Supports the saddle/seat.

Skewer. This is the metallic rod that attaches the wheel to the frame dropouts by going through the hub.

The Spindle. The spindle is a component of the bottom bracket that is attached to the crank arms by a rotating axle.

The Spokes. These are the thicker wires that secure the wheel hub to the rim of the wheel.

Stem. The connection between the steering tube and the handlebar.

Wheel Hub. Dead center of the wheel set is the hub which holds the spokes connecting it to the rim.
